Robert E. Lee on Consulting the Spirits

Since we discussed Union General Ulysses S. Grant, it is only fair that we give some time to his opponent in the field, Confederate General Robert E. Lee. After the Civil War, Robert E. Lee, was president of a college, Washington College of Lexington, Virginia which was renamed in honor upon his death. Today, it is called Washington and Lee University.

On the last day of life, Lee responded to a letter from a letter by a spiritualist. She asked his opinion on the Franco-Prussian War that was taking place at the time. He responded that this is a question that military critics would differ. His opinion on such matters was deficient.

Lee pointed out the medium was free to consult Julius Caesar, Alexander, Napoleon, Wellington and all of history’s great captains Lee said he should be hesitant to voice his opinion in such august company.
